Stephen C. Pflugfelder, M.D.
Dr.
Pflugfelder is a graduate of SUNY Upstate Medical
University Syracuse. He completed his ophthalmology
residency at Baylor College of Medicine, followed
by a corneal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye
Institute at the University of Miami School of
Medicine. He was invited to join the faculty of
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 1985 and was promoted
to professor in 1998. He returned to the Cullen
Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine as
a professor in July 2000, and was awarded
the James and Margaret Elkins Chair in Ophthalmology in 2002.
Dr. Pflugfelder began performing refractive surgery
in 1985. He has published more than 150 research articles,
book chapters, and monographs on disease and surgery
of the cornea, including excimer laser vision
correction surgery. He most recently co-authored
a sentinel textbook, Dry Eye and Ocular Surface
Disorders. He has been named one of the “Best
Doctors in America” in a survey of physicians.
He served on the editorial board of the journals
Cornea and American Journal of Ophthalmology.
He is the president of the International Ocular Surface Society. Dr. Pflugfelder also serves as the director of
the Ocular Surface Center, where research is conducted
in the area of ocular surface disorders.
